What “Gospel Victories” Might Look Like in Your Life

Though the war is won, battles continue.

A Missionary Email

Last week, I received an email update from a missionary friend serving on the other side of the globe. In my reply, I prayed they would experience many “gospel victories.” My initial thought was evangelistic. Praying that folks would come to know Jesus as Savior, Lord, and Treasure through their ministry. However, as I’ve lingered on the phrase, I’m thinking of gospel victories in a much more personal way.

With victories, something or someone defeats something or someone else. There is conflict, tension, and struggle. Someone wins and someone loses.

In view of the cross, Christians know that the war is won. Jesus conquered the eternal consequences of sin through his substitutionary death and triumphant resurrection. As Paul proclaims in Romans 8:1, “Therefore, there is now no more condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

With the victory of Jesus, the “deeper magic” (to use Narnian terms) cracks the stone table and reverses the curse.

Yet we still face skirmishes with the world, flesh, and the devil. Yes, the war is won, but there still are battles to face until Jesus finally quashes the temporal insurrection of the enemy…
