“How do you structure your week for effective sermon prep?”
I get this question a lot.
My answer is always the same.
- Whether you’re bi-vocational or full-time
- If you preach weekly or once a month
- If you use bullet outlines or full manuscripts
You need a sermon prep SYSTEM that follows a fixed, repeatable schedule.
Here’s what I do.
(𝟭) I block out three, four-hour blocks of time on my calendar (two EARLY in the week, and one LATE in the week — to let the message simmer before the final edit)
(𝟮) I divide the blocks into distinct areas of focus:
- Block 1 — Map the big rocks (exegesis + framework) -
- Block 2 — Fill in the blueprint (following a step-by-step roadmap) -
- Block 3 — Edit & perfect the manuscript (ready to preach!)
It takes commitment to stay consistent.
So, enlist others to help if necessary.
Because in the end, without a plan…
- Your week gets hijacked by urgent but less important tasks.
- Sermon prep gets squeezed into leftover time slots.
- You constantly feel behind, scattered, and stressed.
Thankfully, there’s a better way.
I’m teaching everything inside my upcoming, 4-week Preaching That Connects Workshop™ (starting May 6 — next Tues.) as part of the complete PPGR Preaching System®.
