Are You Weary, Too?

Christmas isn’t meant to cause stress and guilt. Here is a better way.

In Matthew 11, Jesus makes an invitation that seems custom made for this time of year.

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

For some of us, the Christmas season, with the promise of rest and peace, becomes a season of emotional stress and physical exhaustion? Attending mandatory social events and buying last minute gifts. Wrapping, decorating, cooking, and rushing, culminating with the word weary.

Weary.

Maybe there is divine purpose woven into the stress of what we have made of Christmas.

After all, there is no command in Scripture to celebrate the incarnation or turn it into a “holy” day (i.e., holiday), all with cultural and familial expectations, or that “I didn’t do Christmas the way I wanted this year.”

Why do we feel guilty for not doing Christmas right?
